The Human Variables

Catalysts of Crisis

Beyond the structural pressures of wealth and influence, there exists a universal vulnerability to profound, unpredictable human disruption.

The personality structure of even the most formidable leader or family steward may have been affected by historical traumas — such as systemic childhood physical, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse, neglect, or early losses — that lie dormant until triggered or may be perceived as an integral part of who you are. Similarly, acute or systemic external destabilizers can tilt the scales of personal psychological balance.

Typical examples of crisis and psychological destabilizers are: vehicle accidents leading to impaired cognition or mobility; the sudden death of a loved one; suicide in the family or close social circles; loved ones with severe mental illness or addictions; family members involved in or victims of crime; extended family with economical difficulties; infertility or difficulty conceiving; sexual difficulties and inhibition; marriage crisis, separation and divorce; secrecy, children and partners outside of marriage; infighting, jealousy and disputes for privilege in multi-cultural or multi-partner family structures; a life-altering chronic or degenerative disease diagnosis; a sudden financial reversal; war or refugee trauma; the immediate devastation of environmental or geopolitical crises.

When an individual is already operating at the threshold of their emotional bandwidth, these unyielding human variables are not merely setbacks; they are catalysts for crisis, requiring an immediate, robust, and expertly contained interdisciplinary medical and/or psychoanalytical intervention.

Our Clinical Response to Acute Crisis

In moments of severe destabilization, our immediate clinical priority is to address, contain, and honor the profound psychological pain. We provide a rigorously secure, anchoring environment to help the client navigate the disorienting cascade of crisis, loss, and acute grief — moving safely through pain, shock, numbness, denial, disorientation, anger, despair, and loss of meaning and identity.

Physical and psychological pain are overpowering disruptors: acute shock and pain of any kind override logical reasoning and unleash emotional chaos. One common response to unbearable suffering is the impulse to make life-changing decisions to escape the pain.

Even the most experienced leaders are not entirely equipped to manage such impulses, which often translate into selling or abandoning everything and moving to a distant place, rushing into new romantic relationships, abruptly asking for divorce, severing lifelong friendships, quitting work, firing cornerstone employees such as a CFO, trying to take their own lives, plunging into addictions, “Russian Roulette” substance use, or heavy gambling.

Other behaviors include the sudden launch of high-risk projects or financial investments, and rushed alliances with hostile competitors, or unvetted, untrustworthy partners.

On a personal level, a crisis can drive individuals toward high-risk activities and extreme sports without appropriate safety measures — such as freediving, free solo rock climbing, solo backcountry expeditions in high-avalanche conditions, or high-speed street racing, among many other life-threatening pursuits.

These states demand immediate intervention and support to allow the client to gradually return to an emotional baseline before we can invest in psychoanalytical exploration toward a new level of well-being.‍ ‍

It is impossible to analyze the broader architecture of the psyche in the middle of a crisis. The priority is to stabilize the pain.

AXIAPSI offers you decades of rigorous training and clinical experience in crisis support, intervention, and resolution.
